more musicians you should listen to

I am opinionated about music. Particularly, what constitutes GOOD music.

Nickelback is not good music. Most of Creed's stuff is crap. Many of Britney Spears' songs suck. Most of Ashlee Simpson's songs blow. I don't want to name any names, but i know of many a band signed to a record label yet COMPLETELY undeserving of such financial support.

Mae is good music.
'did you know how you would move me? did you know?'

Copeland is good music.
'your love is a fast song, and it's spinning me around again'

Coldplay is phenomenal music.
'give me real, don't give me fake. give me heart and give me soul'

i think if music wasn't digital these days, i would be the kind of person to wear out the "record" or play the "tape" out.

what got me thinking about these bands - i made a 'mix tape' kinda thing for Leah. Usually, i hate that kinda stuff. I just think it's a little trite, when guys make mix CDs for girls, or vice versa. BUT... i have over 400 CDs. there are soooooooo many songs that have impacted me, and i want to see how she reacts to the songs. i want to see what she perceives, how she interprets the songs that have shaped my own songwriting. I don't really have the time, or better - the patience, to share all 400+ CDs with her, and gauge her reactions that way... so, I burned 18 tracks to a disc... and for those of you who truly know me, you know how my heart broke with every track that was burned...

and yet, i'm very excited about hearing from her when she has had a chance to listen... there's a lot to be said for complementary perspectives... and i think hers is different enough from mine to be quite interesting, yet similar enough that we'll be on the same page, if not in the same paragraph.

so this post was pretty stream of consciousness... but when i'm here at work, the things i think about tend to be God, music, and relationships, in that order usually.

i think i'll post about my dad next. this could be interesting.
