a slow trickle... a growing stream

daily, people are arriving back in Buies Creek.
The RAs are all here for training...
the volleyball team, women's soccer team, and men's team have all arrived and started practices...

btw... if you haven't been to a college volleyball game, you're missing out.

which is why i just got done playing sand volleyball... and wishing i was still in shape.

the new nickel creek CD is a work of beauty... incredible harmonies, a diverse texture of sounds, quite a ride from start to finish. a few stretches for them musically, but i think the risks were worth it because it gives the album wider range. So many of their songs are about love... love lost... love confused... gives me encouragement for the songs i write that tend to be about love lost... or loved ones confused...

'the Spill Canvas' is also a great band making interesting music... albeit, completely about relationships from a more selfish perspective. it was interesting while i was listening to it the first time in my car (my first listen to a CD is always a big deal... i turn it up REALLY loud and let the music just wash over me... sometimes in my car, sometimes in my apt with surround sound)... as i let the lyrics sink in, i realized how one-sided the lyricist's perspective was... he had a lot of interesting things to say, and things that resonated with me, but it began to dawn on me that he had a really messed up idea of love, and that's why it wasn't working for him.
in contrast to Nickel Creek's perspective... you can tell that there is something different behind Chris Thile's or Sean Watkins' concept of love than the guys from 'the Spill Canvas.'

i hope the songs i write don't come from a selfish idea of love... if nothing else, i've learned that love is self-emptying and encouraging and empowering to the loved one.

it's funny trying to turn a 'loved' one into an acquaintance
