The most obvious reason why i don't dance...
i can't.
at least, not well. I can move a bit, and i definitely have rhythm... but i've never paid enough attention nor been taught enough to really have a clue what's going on.
but there's something a bit more substantial than that going on -
dancing is very intimate.
even the most awkward kind of dancing has a level of intimacy to it. I've had plenty of time to reflect on this at the various weddings i've been to this summer. Placing a hand on a woman's back, or on her hip, and holding the other hand... while holding your face less than a foot from hers... if you were on a couch, this wouldn't be called dancing.
BUT, since you're standing up, and swaying out-of-time with some overplayed music, it is called dancing and you're supposed to enjoy it.
Now, i'm not saying i don't enjoy being that close to a girl.
I AM saying that being that close to a girl i probably won't see again, or couldn't care less for, is pretty pointless in the grand scheme of things.
If i dance with a woman, i want it to mean something much more than just the immediate enjoyment of holding someone of the fairer gender.
I want to dance passionately.
i don't want to dance out of obligation or requirement...
I want to put all of myself into the music, as i do when i write, sing, or perform...
not so sure if the average bridesmaid at a wedding could handle that... :-)

well, in the sense of slow dancing, I'd say yes, it's very strange standing that close to someone, sort of swaying to the music and trying not to step on their feet...but other kinds of dancing (for example, swing) can be very fun (even aerobic) and not require quite as much intimacy... if you can only master them and get a partner who also know's what they're doing.

it's okay if you're scared dave. just say it.
oh, i'm scared of all sorts of things :-)
but i'm learning to move right into and through those fears...

aMEN, that´s precisely what i´ve been trying to tell the people here, but the culture here (well, in latinoamérica) is just so different and in some ways so much more sexual...not even my teachers really understand why i´m not interested in hooking up (in some form or another) with random tico guys.....eek.
although i also agree with ´bujinkankid´...i went dancing at this huge salsa club in the capital the other night with some ticos from my dance class and had the best time dancing i´ve ever experienced.
Dancing is always fun when you KNOW HOW daVID, and what better music to dance to than a little salsa or a little merengue y bachata. YOu want passion, Spanish music, thats all the "Pascion tu necesitas david." And what better place than a Latin Country, or why not just Dominican Republic, now theres a place. (O_o)
