i have action figures in my bedroom.
the entire Justice League, to be precise. They're perched right in front of the Hall of Justice, from the classic 70's-80's series. everyone's there... the Batman and Robin, Superman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and even Wonder Woman (the guys had to fight over SOMEone).
I always wanted to be Robin, growing up. He was cool enough to be the Batman's sidekick, but also had a life outside of the costume. The current Robin, in the comic timeline, has a dad and stepmom, as well as girlfriend and lots of relationship problems. BUT... if he's pissed at the world, he can change into costume and beat the crap out of a mugger or thief or rapist. How cool is that.
as if stopping the problem of evil were as simple as a good, swift kick...
i, for one, choose to hold my imagination close to me. Transformers, GI Joe, Batman, and Star Wars helped a little kid learn how to dream, and have helped build a songwriter who hopefully crafts dream into song. When the reality of broken relationships (stupid girls) or ridiculous financial situations slaps me in the face, it's nice to glance over into the corner and see Superman standing just as firm as ever, a testament to the hope and possibility available to me if i just close my eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine.
nothing is ever simple, though.
